Modern neuroscience has extensively studied brain function using neuroimaging, electrophysiology, lesion studies, and clinical neurology. While scientists continue to learn how the brain works, the central claim itself has been thoroughly investigated and is considered inconsistent with current scientific evidence.

Brain imaging, neurological examinations, and decades of neuroscience research show that virtually every region of the brain serves identifiable functions and becomes active under appropriate circumstances. Peer-reviewed quantitative work likewise finds comparable numbers of neuronal and non-neuronal cells in the human brain, rather than a dormant 90% reserve. Different regions contribute to different tasks, and no evidence supports the existence of a large, permanently inactive 90% reserve. This does not mean every neuron is active simultaneously or that every region contributes equally to every task. Scientists continue to study how brain networks interact and how efficiently different people perform cognitive tasks, but those questions are distinct from the "10%" claim.
